Grand Valley Horse Rescue

Started in 2020 by a group of children and two adults, Grand Valley Horse Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization that saves horses of all kinds, retrains them into youth performance horses, and provides affordable access to horses for children in the community.

Since its inception, GVHR has rescued over 60 horses and impacted the lives of countless children and adults.  We continue to teach children how to care for, train, and ride horses while also teaching our rescued horses how to be loved by humans.

Our organization relies heavily on donations from individuals and businesses in the community.  Every penny raised is used to benefit the horses and children who call Grand Valley Horse Rescue their loving home.

Partner with us in rescuing horses from undesirable situations, connecting them with children, and finding them their forever homes!

Project Cirrus

Protecting Mustangs in Western Colorado

Project Cirrus was formed in 2022 with one goal in mind: to protect and preserve the Mustangs of Western Colorado by preventing these iconic wild horses from entering the slaughter pipeline.  The project is a collaborative effort between Grand Valley Horse Rescue and the Eagles and Wild Horses Ranch to ensure the well-being of these majestic creatures.

Project Cirrus has rescued and prevented 33 Mustangs from going to slaughter in the last 2 years!

How Horses Help Children

Aside from rescuing and training horses, our other main goal is to provide affordable access to horses for children in our community. Many professionals agree that handling, riding, and caring for a horse or pony can provide a wide range of benefits to a child.

Physical Exercise

Riding horses requires balance, coordination, and strength, providing children with a fun and engaging form of physical activity.

Responsibility

Caring for horses teaches children important life skills such as time management, organization, and accountability.

Stress Relief

Spending time with horses has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, promoting relaxation and mental well-being.

Cognitive Development

Learning to understand and communicate with horses enhances children's problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills.

Empowerment

The sense of control and achievement children gain from successfully handling and riding horses empowers them to overcome challenges in other areas of their lives.

Emotional Bonding

Children develop deep emotional connections with horses, fostering empathy, trust, and companionship.

Confidence Building

Mastering the skills required to ride and handle horses boosts children's self-esteem and belief in their abilities.

Social Skillls

Working with horses in a group setting encourages teamwork, communication, and cooperation among children.

Sensory Stimulation

Interacting with horses engages all five senses, providing a multi-sensory experience that stimulates cognitive development.

Connection to Nature

Working with horses fosters a deep appreciation for the natural world and helps children develop a sense of environmental stewardship.
